FIXTURE SECRETARY'S REPORT | BACK TO MINUTES

VICTORIA PARK COMMUNITY CRICKET LEAGUE
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
6:30 pm Tuesday 22 February 2005

From Fixtures Secretary Peter Hollman

Last season it was back to memories of previous seasons when a series of matches had to be re-arranged due to tube strikes, & sods law was that they & some inclement weather coincided during the only time that games had to be arranged due to the cup. Nevertheless, credit to all involved parties who remained patient.

I am happy to report that I felt that the inaugural season of a Supers6/7 from my perspective went really well & straw-polling the teams & reps I spoke to you, everyone seemed happy enough with the new format.

If however, there were consensus to revert or tinker, I would be happy to adhere.
I have now drafted several different versions based on 2 & 3 pitches & up to 20 teams. The one constraint is the finite amount of time available & the need to allocate matches to teams whereby each team play 1 game a week for the 3 core months of May to July wherever possible.

With this in mind, I would again advocate 2 groups of sides in the 1st round as in 2004 but instead of splitting into a premier & plate competition after the cup, sub-dividing into 3 divisions. So for 20 teams for example, this would give each side 9 1st round games & 3 2nd (= 12) + cup. Last year 14 was the most amount of games played by any one side (Pacific, Sleek) & 11 the least (Newham, Old Fallopians, Tower Ravens).

If we remain at 16 teams then I would advocate at least a 2nd year of this format before deciding to revert to the old format of either 1 or 2 (or even 3 divisions).
Despite the cup re-arrangements, league matches tended to remain unaffected by the weather bar the 1st June. Discipline was another issue but not one I will be covering here – suffice to say re-arrangements were not considered for logistical as well as practical reasons.

Teams did play their 2nd round dates as pre-scheduled but despite this I am conscious that there should still be an opportunity for Clubs to rearrange 2nd round matches if all involved parties are in agreement. As such, I propose a window of 7 days in which to liase, & contact the fixture Secretary after the last 1st round match is completed.

Last season I circulated a draft of fixtures but only 1 side got back to me requesting re-scheduling. Please can all sides ensure they are fully conversant with their dates & contact me so I can publish the full & final fixtures ASAP.
I would remind teams that April & early May games all have sunset times for a reason & that Captains who are unable to bring the start time forward, should be realistic when re-appraising the amount of time for the amount of each sides’ overs can be completed.

In 2003 there were 11 games cancelled by forfeit which is 10%, this year it was 9 (at just under 9%) which is a step in the right direction.
If re-elected I will endeavour to ensure wherever possible that teams play no more or less than once a week during the core months of May to July against teams best suited to their standard & that no team will be asked to play at any other venue against their wishes.
