In a very close finish that went to the last ball, Island Community CC
held on to secure a sigle run victory over league newcomers Wrong'uns.
Island were bowled out for just 96 off 12.5 overs, thanks to slow but
straight bowling (ideal for the VPCCL) and two unlucky runouts.
Young wicketkeeper Joe Tousent, who celebrated his 17th birthday just
last week, was looking very composed before being given run out when he
claims he was already over the stumps crease nevermind the popping crease,
only for Dheraj Shamoo to be out the very next ball without taking strike.
As the non-striker, Mo Rahman drove hard and straight right into his
backing up partner, leaving Dheraj prostrate 3 yds short of his ground, only
for the ball to run straight to a fielder who took off the bails.
The Wrong'uns response started well after losing Robin LBW to Miran
(Tousif Fiaz) with Luke, Adam and Matt all scoring freely, but the
introduction of spinners Tanjeem Chowdhury and Robert Jones put the brakes
on, Tanjeem conceding only 10 runs off his 4 overs and Jonsey just 17.
But an expensive penultimate over left Wrong Uns needing 12 off the
last to win with 3 wickets in hand.
Two fours off the Dheraj Shamoo's first two balls meant 4 were needed
off 4 balls, but good catches from both captain Tanjeem and Mo Rahman meant
two wickets had fallen and 4 were needed off the last 2 balls.
A hurried bye was taken off the fifth delivery leaving 2 needed to tie
the game from the last ball.
The batsman swiped and missed but the keeper dropped it, then cooly
walked to pick up the ball from behind him and walked back to the stumps,
allowing them to complete a bye without attempting a run out throw, thus
securing a one-run victory for Island.
What a cool head from young Joe! A great finish for a match played in
good spirits.
