The Conquerors got 2010 off to a winning start thanks to a disciplined
performance with bat and ball. Fazal Mohammed carried his fine form of last
season by lifting the first ball of the game for six and followed it with a
sweetly struck four. A big score looked likely for Fazal but Martians
skipper Graham Hall produced a peach of a late swinging dipping yorker to
rattle the timbers with the third ball of the over.
Callys looked to keep the scoring rate high in the early overs but the
introduction of John Kavanagh stemmed the flow of runs and with a couple of
tight overs from Mike Pimblett sorely testing the patience of the batsmen it
meant that steady accumulation was the order of the day. At the halfway
stage Callys looked well short of a defendable total but with six wickets in
hand Waqar Ali and Nadeem Mohammed had built a useful platform for a late
assault on the bowling.
Waqar Ali broke the shackles and raced to his fifty with a series of
pulls and well timed punchy drives down the ground. As Ali retired there was
no let up in the pace of the scoring, the stage was set for Anser Mahmood to
blaze his way to 39 with a fine demonstration of powerful hitting which
enabled Callys to set a challenging total of 153. The Martians chase
faltered early on as three wickets went down in the first five overs. Dave
Nagraj launched a counter attack ably supported by John Kavanagh. The run
out of Kavanagh thanks to the quick thinking and fine throw of Fazal
Mohammed signalled the end of the Martians charge. Nagraj retired for a
distinguished fifty leaving the Callys slow bowlers to stem the flow of runs
and wrap up the game with a couple of balls to spare.
