1999 Champions v President's VIIIThis season opener was the brain child of new fixtures secretary, Pete Hollman, and a very good idea it is too. Although the climate did its miserable English best to convince us that April is a bad time to be playing cricket, we were fortunate enough to have a dry evening on 19th. The captains agreed to reduce the overs to 13 per side and the light just about held long enough. New Grasshopppers I captain, Dougal de Keller, won the toss and decided to field first. It seemed unlikely to be a high-scoring match, with the rain having turned the outfield into a suet pudding, but President's openers, Tariq and Amjad, got off to a good start, playing some big shots. Grasshoppers' opening bowler, Seb Tennant, was expensive, but picked up the first wicket, getting Tariq with an easy return catch for 20. At the other end, Majid, making his debut for the club, bowled well without taking any wickets. Amjad's determination to press on with the scoring led to the run out of Chris(#1), but some good support from Chris (#2) and Johnny Hodgkinson enabled Amjad to finish on 48* and the President's team to set a fairly challenging 96 to win. Grasshoppers' run chase started badly, when former captain Joe Phelan was run out in the first over by a superb bit of fielding from Joe Czernuska. Tariq bowled fast and accurately, conceding only 10 runs off his three overs and taking one wicket. But most of the damage was done by Joe Czernuska (again!) who replaced Tariq at the far end (well, I can't think of any distinguishing landmarks to name it after!!). He took 3-13 off his three overs and with another run out, this time affected by Graham Hall, the Grasshoppers' run chase fell well short as they lost by 43 runs. As it was getting decidely dark and miserable outside, nobody was too sorry to adjourn to the pub where the cup draw took place. President's VIII Grasshoppers I
